Toe-may-toes

21 09 2011

Toe-mah-toes? Whatever.

This was a big tomato week. I got together with some awesome ladies to do our annual tomato canning project (3rd year!) and we knocked out 160 lbs of jarred wonderfulness. Mmmmm…

And then we got this for our CSA today:

Eggs, apples, parsley, basil, lettuce, chard, zucchini, bell peppers, tomatillos, and lots of tomatoes. Yum.

And with our last CSA we made:

  • bean and cheese enchiladas and turkey enchiladas with green sauce (using the tomatillos from 2 boxes plus some bell pepper)
  • melon : )
  • salads with tomatoes, bacon, and blue cheese dressing
  • sauteed zucchini, potatoes and onion with poached eggs on top
  • caprese salad
  • scrambled eggs with potatoes, onions, bell pepper, and pepper jack cheese
  • turkey soup with zucchini, potatoes, and bell pepper

And other things…

Nice melons

Your challenge today, should you choose to accept it, is to carry the entire contents of the CSA box, including 2 small melons and lots of very squishable tomatoes, home via bicycle.

Ta-da!

I fit most of it delicately in my backpack but I had to carry the watermelon under my arm. Tricky.

Today we have a watermelon, what appears to be a cantaloupe/muskmelon but I couldn’t identify it here, tomatillos, basil, chives, potatoes, zucchini, big beautiful bell peppers, and so many tomatoes that I decided you should hear what varietals we received: purple calabash, piriform, red and black brandywine, lemon boy, and loads of cherry tomatoes (see the sungolds in there? mmmmm…..).

And in what may be a regular bit, a brief list of what we did with the CSA from 2 weeks ago:

  • ratatouille w/ poached eggs
  • veggie soup w/ garbanzo beans (peppers, tomatoes, basil, zucchini, potatoes)
  • the peppers went in lots of salads, thinly sliced
  • apples w/ cheese
  • sliced tomatoes with mozzarella and basil
  • omelets
  • egg scrambles with potatoes and cheese
  • potato pancakes
  • tomato martinis

And Pimms!

Which also remind me of my fun time at the river.

Here with equal parts limeade and ginger ale:

In the adorable juice glasses the hubby and I found at our new favorite second hand store, Stuff.

Tray from across the way

5 09 2011

I love snacky foods. And setting out little tastes of a lot of things when friends come over. So I was very excited to discover that my good friend Amber does too! She calls it “tray” and I was lucky enough to enjoy one with her (and friends) at her summer home last month.

We have a couple folks coming over for a back yard bbq today, and I put this tray together:

Strawberries, green Greek olives, cubed pepper jack cheese (childhood favorite!), herbs de provence coated salami, pistacios, bread and butter pickles, ho-made pickled carrots, and 2 wheels of cheese from the Nicasio Valley Cheese Company, a Formagella, and a Foggy Morning, which we’ll be enjoying with the last gravenstein apples of the season.

Box o’ meat

2 09 2011

Boom:

It’s not as classically pretty as the veggie CSA, but that box o’ meat will bring just as much joy. There is a bone-in turkey breast half, 2 rib eye steaks, a lb of ground lamb, a lb of ground pork, 2 lbs of ground beef, and 3 lbs of chicken wings that I plan on making this weekend using Nettie’s Grandma’s special Hawaiian wing recipe. Anyone have plans on Sunday?
