Can you guess what these are?

Box pillow

25 10 2010

Below is a slightly fuzzy picture of my first, and what will likely be my last (at least for a long while) box pillow.  Why did I choose stripes?!  Why did I choose foam?!  The corners!  The zipper!  Good grief.

Carmella loves her new bed but she sure does hate getting her picture taken.

This week’s CSA report

21 10 2010

Eggs, broccoli, arugula, spinach, cilantro, basil, tomatoes, lettuce, apples, green beans, and a pumpkin!

A big project in the works

17 10 2010

A couple of years ago, Moonpie and I built some veggie boxes and started (attempting) to grow some of our own food.  Thus far, we have had limited success.  The ups? arugula, cherry tomatoes, purple peas, and parsley.  The downs? teeny carrots and beets, serious fails on lettuce, spinach, basil, and cabbage, and a complete inability to grow even one zucchini (how is this even possible?).

The boxes are in the side portion of yard:

And here we are half way through the overhaul (before on the left, after on the right):

We broke down the boxes, broke up the existing packed dirt, spread out the dirt from the boxes, trimmed up the existing plants, laid out the new plants, bulbs, and bits of sweet potato and got those in the ground, and mulched the new non-edibles area (which does include some edibles…). Next steps are planting the edibles, building the fence, and, in December, planting the tulips.  Plus there’s work to be done on the lawn.

It sure is fun to play in the dirt!

Dinner Tonight

14 10 2010

Man, I’m gonna miss strawberry season.

Meat CSA

8 10 2010

In addition to our fabulous veggie CSA we participate in a meat CSA.  In the box this week we received 2 aged NY strip steaks, a sirloin tip roast, 2 lbs ground beef and 1 lb ground pork.  Mmmmmmm…..

CSA Plus

7 10 2010

Our CSA box today included 2 tomato sauces, made by our Eatwell peeps, as thanks for Moonpie and Sparks signing up.  Thanks!

Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes, peppers, basil, parsley, spinach, cucumbers, bell peppers, eggplant*, apples, onions, potatoes & eggs (not pictured):

And look how special our eggplant is:

He kind of looks like a Beatle.
